In nature, true Citrine forms over millions of years through geological processes: Amethyst or Smoky Quartz is slowly heated deep within the Earth's crust, oxidizing the iron to produce subtle, pale golden hues. This natural formation is rare, making authentic untreated citrine a collector's gem. As a faster alternative, most commercial Citrine is created through heat treatment—typically by baking Amethyst (purple quartz) or Smoky Quartz at 800–900°F (427–482°C) in controlled lab conditions. This mimics the Earth's transformative heat, accelerating the color change in mere hours or days to yield deeper, more uniform orange or reddish tones. While visually striking and energetically potent, heat-treated Citrine often shows telltale signs like a white base (from its amethyst origins) or clustered color distribution.
