Cinnabar is known for its rich, earthy red tones and has been used historically as a pigment and decorative material. True cinnabar is mercury sulfide and toxic in raw form, but most modern cinnabar beads — including these — are synthetic and lacquered for safe wear. This bracelet features twelve carved beads, each representing one of the animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle, from Rat to Pig. The carvings are detailed and symbolic, reflecting traditional motifs associated with personality traits, annual energies, and cultural lineage. Smooth round cinnabar beads alternate between the carved figures, creating a balanced coil threaded with double elastic.

CINNABAR
Cinnabar is a mercury sulfide mineral known for its vivid scarlet to brick‑red colour. Because natural Cinnabar contains mercury, it is considered toxic in raw or powdered form and historically required careful handling. Most cinnabar jewellery on the modern market is not carved from raw mercury sulfide. Instead, contemporary Cinnabar beads are typically synthetic or lacquer‑based composites designed to replicate the traditional appearance without the toxicity. These materials are usually made from pigmented resin, lacquer, and binding agents that are pressed or moulded into shape, then carved or detailed once hardened. This allows for the deep red colour and intricate motifs associated with historical cinnabar carving, while remaining safe for everyday wear. Some pieces also use a layered lacquer technique, where multiple coats of red lacquer are applied over a carved base, echoing the traditional Chinese craft of carved lacquerware. Cinnabar is thought to support transformation and spiritual growth and is associated with healing and vitality, abundance and success.
