Selenite is the transparent, satin‑sheen variety of gypsum (calcium sulfate), formed through the slow evaporation of mineral‑rich waters in calm, sedimentary environments such as clay beds and ancient inland basins. It develops in long, fibrous or tabular crystals marked by natural striations that run the length of the stone. When polished, Selenite shows a soft, pearlescent glow; in its raw form, it carries a frosted, milky translucency.
