The coloration is typically due to iron oxide inclusions, which form during the stone’s slow crystallization process within silica-rich volcanic rock. Red Moss Agate is a variety of Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) formed from silicon dioxide, featuring dendritic inclusions of manganese, chlorite, and/or iron. These inclusions create moss-like patterns—typically green and white—but in this variety, iron oxide inclusions formed during oxidation give rise to rich red, rust, or brick-toned hues.
