Ocean Jasper occurs when colloidal suspensions suffer water loss and solidify into masses of microcrystalline quartz. The term "Ocean Jasper" is a trademarked name, which means it is legally protected and can only be used to describe specific orbicular Jasper mined from certain locations in northern Madagascar. Found exclusively in Madagascar, Ocean Jasper is collected during low tide along the coast. There are two main deposits: Marovato (coastal) and Kabamby (inland).
